Fiona Macpherson is a Sydney based artist living and practicing on Gadigal Land. Exploring the vast landscape of online image archives through an expanded, post-photographic painting practice, Fiona’s work seeks to reveal how painterly reproduction can work to unsettle the content and reliability of an image. Working at an intersection of counter-archival practice and trauma studies within post-digital visual culture, Fiona employs material explorations of surface and underside, skin and screen as a metaphor for perceived reality and traumatic rupture.
Fiona completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in painting at UNSW Arts, Design and Architecture in 2022, where she was awarded the Ross Steele AM Fine Arts Prize for outstanding work in The Annual, and received Highly Commended for the TWT Excellence Award. She undertook her first international residency at Arteles Creative Centre in Hämeenkyrö, Finland, at the beginning of 2023, and has been curating and exhibiting in group shows both locally and interstate since.
