General Practice teaching in the UNSW Medicine Program

The program model is changing in 2027. Read about the current and future changes.

Current primary care teaching

Yr 3 - Society and Health Term ​

  • Students undertake a 4-week placement in community-based settings, including general practices

Yr 5 or 6 – General Practice Term ​

  • Students complete an 8-week GP rotation, divided between two general practices (4 weeks each)
  • They must complete 50 half-day GP sessions per 4-week block, typically spending 3 to 3.5 days per week in your practice
  • Supervision may be shared among GPs, registrars, practice nurses, and allied health professionals

New course program

2027

Year 4 GP course launching

Students will undertake approximately 30 GP placement sessions in Year 4

Most students will complete these through a longitudinal placement (one session per week), while others will have block-based placements

2029

Year 3 GP and Primary Care course launching

Modelled on the current Society & Health Term, students will be introduced to primary healthcare models and their role within the broader health system

Students will complete approximately 24 GP placement sessions in Year 3, delivered as either a 3- or 6-week block

Year 6 GP placements launching

As part of the Transition to Clinical Practice term, students will complete approximately 20 GP placement sessions in their GP Assistant role
