We are delighted to announce the promotion of two outstanding academics from the School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW Sydney to the position of Lecturer. Nathan Jackson and Alan Stoneham’s promotions were confirmed in the latest academic round.

Dr Jackson and Dr Stoneham have long histories with UNSW, having initially joined the university as students.

Dr Jackson completed a Bachelor of Advanced Mathematics with Honours in 2016, under the supervision of Professor Fedor Sukochev. He became a casual tutor in the School in 2017.

Dr Jackson went on to complete a PhD in the School of the Arts and Media in the Faculty of Arts, Design, and Architecture. His thesis, “Persona Play in Videogame Livestreaming: An Ethnography of Performance on Twitch”, examined the ways that individual and collective identities are formed and performed through online platforms. He has since applied this expertise to several technological initiatives in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, aimed at enhancing the student experience.

Dr Stoneham, who completed a Bachelor of Advanced Science with a major in Mathematics and Physics, graduated in 2018 with Honours under the supervision of Professor Ian Doust. He was awarded the prestigious University Medal, the highest honour an undergraduate can receive at UNSW.

Dr Stoneham’s PhD, “AC(σ)-Operators and Functions of Bounded Variation”, also supervised by Professor Doust, earned him a 2023 Dean’s Award for Outstanding PhD Theses. In addition, his talk, A generalisation of the spectral theorem for self-adjoint operators, earned him an Honourable Mention for the B.H. Neumann Prize at the 2021 Australian Mathematical Society Annual Meeting.

Both Dr Jackson and Dr Stoneham began their roles as Associate Lecturers (Education Focused) in the School of Mathematics and Statistics in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

“Congratulations to Nathan Jackson and Alan Stoneham, who have been successful in their promotion applications to Level B!”, said Head of School, Professor Andrew Francis.

“Well done to both - much deserved.”
