On February 25, 2026, the International Centre for Future Health Systems (ICFHS) hosted an event titled “Putting the Person in Precision Medicine”, bringing together 13 national and international experts to explore how precision medicine can be effectively implemented into clinical care, especially in primary care. The event took place at the UNSW Sydney Health Translation Hub and was delivered in partnership with the UNSW Faculty of Science and the Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics.
Precision medicine is transforming health care in some specialised areas, such as rare diseases and oncology, but its adoption in primary care remains limited. This event examined the diversity of primary care populations, the current state of genomic applications relevant to frontline healthcare, and the complex clinical and health-system challenges involved in delivering personalised care at scale. The workshop identified key priorities for the coming decade, highlighting the scientific, clinical, cultural, and policy actions needed to enable the sustainable integration of precision medicine into primary care.
Hosted by Dr Braulio Valencia Arroyo (Senior Research Fellow, ICFHS), speakers and panellists included Professor Tiffany Boughtwood (Australian Health Genomics Commissioner, Genomics Australia), Professor Jon Emery (Co-Director, Research Institute for Cancer Prevention, Screening and Early Detection, NTU Singapore), Professor Tamara Lee (Director, Future Workforce, NSW Health), Professor Cheryl Jones (Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Health, UNSW), Professor Kristopher Kilian (Co-Director of the Australian Centre for Nanomedicine), Professor Patricia Davidson (Co-Director ICFHS), Professor Alex Brown (Director, National Centre for Indigenous Genomics, Australian National University), Associated Professor Fatemeh Vafaee (Deputy Director, UNSW AI Institute), Associated Professor Martin Smith (Director, Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics), Associated Professor Simon Jiang (John Curtin School of Medical Research, Australian National University), Associated Professor Emma Palmer (Clinical Geneticist, Sydney Children’s Hospital Network) and Dr Jialing Lin (Research Fellow, ICFHS).
