  • Schenk, B. (2023). “Foreword”. In I. Pellion di Persano (ed.), Viscera (p. 11). Turin: Recontemporary.

“Placing uncertainty at the centre of art, it vivifies how these events and their interactions fundamentally destabilise the predictable existential conditions under which we have historically lived. This means reframing aesthetics from Descartes’ question of “what I am certain I see” to “how do we engage with the uncertainty of the world”.”

Mastroianni, R. (2023). “Apokálypsis”. In I. Pellion di Persano (ed.), Viscera (pp. 14-15). Turin: Recontemporary.

“The exhibited works shape a kaleidoscope of images and sounds, through which the viewer is called to engage, becomingpart of a complex narrative device which, on one hand, displays the ecological fragility of our world, and on the other, prompts reflections on the emotional and cognitive nature of a “landscape” now beyond our control, no longer the theaterof our evolution, but the backdrop of a crisis that jeopardizes our very survival.”

Frohne, U. (2023). “Night Drifts Above the Earth”. In I. Pellion di Persano (ed.), Viscera (pp. 28-31). Turin: Recontemporary.

“...The digitally animated installations unfold scenarios of disaster that radically break also with the sublime aesthetic celebrated in 19th century art on the eve of industrialization. […] Del Favero unfolds a contemporary panorama of the world’s ontology that can be read as a scientifically grounded diagnosis of the forces in the face of the anthropogenic destruction of the living sphere that demand an environmental contract not only for the humankind, but for multispecies inthe face of a much more rapidly than anticipated advancing global warming. [...] These are observations that indicateethical engagement, applying the methodologies of art that no longer prioritizes the aesthetic experience of contemplation alone, but rather enact an intersectionalist politics of aesthetics, that uncovers the complex interconnected strands ofpolitical ecology, climate injustice, disaster capitalism, colonial domination, socio-economic extractivism and environmental catastrophes...”

    Duguet, A.M. (2008). “Foreword”. In J. Bennett (ed.), T_Visionarium: A User’s Guide (p. 4). Karlsruhe/Sydney: ZKM/UNSW Press.

“T_Visionarium addresses the part played by digital media in the construction of collective consciousness, memory and imagination and its effect on social behaviour. No longer are we in front of the image but at the heart of the scene, facing not one screen but surrounded simultaneously by a multiplicity of images. No longer are we just beholders but activators and editors, our whole body involved in the reception and recombination of images. No longer do we wait for an image, but we access it immediately.”

    Bennett, J. (2008). “Gesture/Affect.” In J. Bennett (ed.), T_Visionarium: A User’s Guide (p. 39). Karlsruhe/Sydney: ZKM/UNSW Press.

“Here, media is not an object of study but a medial landscape in which we are component parts. T_Visionarium is a useable technology – a relentlessly aesthetic project that resists definition as an artwork. In essence it is not so much a tool that delivers control of a mediscape but a mode of inhabiting our surroundings: a sphere of a pure and endless mediality.”

Smith, T. (2011). “Transnational Virtuality: New Media Arts, Contemporary Concerns.” In J. Anderson (ed.), The Cambridge Companion to Australian Art (p. 260). Melbourne: CUP.

“[T_Visionarium] takes interactivity to a new technological level, and introduces the spectator to a depth of immersion yet enablement not matched in other art dealing with social mediation – one of contemporary art’s most central themes. […] [Del Favero’s works] have reached a level of maturity with regard to medium that matches that of the best artists working in whatever medium anywhere in the world.”

Clare Stewart, Artistic Director of the London Film Festival (A. Watanabe, News.com.au, 2011).

“[Scenario] positions Australia as a creative and technological leader in the film industry”

    Weibel, P. (2011). “Foreword.” In E. Scheer (ed.), Scenario (p. 11-13). Karlsruhe/Sydney: ZKM/UNSW Press.

“Scenario is a tour de force, a world-first cinematic innovation that integrates artificial intelligence with the technologies of interactivity, 3D, color, sound and the moving image […] Scenario is the first work that combines all the steps in the evolution of cinema, and is therefore closet to cinema’s ambition to imitate life, not only in its technology abut also in its content: confronting the shadowy side of humankind with the bright light of technological progress.”

Scheer, E. (2011). “The Baby: Fragments.” In E. Scheer (ed.), Scenario (p.71). Karlsruhe/Sydney: ZKM/UNSW Press.

“Perhaps this is the ultimate achievement of the work as an artwork, the production of lived affects, sculpted into the form of performative media, and creating a sense of possibility spilling into the space of the event”.

Waterlow, N. and P. Weibel (2004). “Foreword.” In J. Bennett (ed.), Dennis Del Favero: Fantasmi. Hannover: Sprengel Museum.

“Del Favero chooses to dwell on the darker matter within, not to obscure, as with so much artistic endeavour, but to reveal its revelatory and utterly disturbing continuity. This representation of the ‘discontent in culture’ (Freud) which is often suppressed or sublimated in art, makes the work of Del Favero so relevant.”

Weibel, P. (1999). “Political Intersections.” In J. Shaw (ed.), Dennis Del Favero - Cross Currents. Karlsruhe: ZKM.

“The representation of evil is a classical problem of art…How, then, is it possible to represent events that are ugly by images that are by definition unable to be unsightly? Between those twin grapples of meaning and beauty, of ugliness and meaninglessness, Del Favero’s work unfolds as a critique of meaning and critique of beauty. In other words, he is looking for a way out of the paradox.”
