Andrew is an applied scientists with over a decade of experience across academia and government. His expertise extends to using a range of technologies including drones and advanced sensors with deep learning to deliver real-time edge analytics. Andrew focuses on high profile complex environmental problems that require collaboration with diverse stakeholders with the potential to scale across large areas or similar applications. More recently he has been building cloud and AI capability across teams in Parks Australia to derive insights from drone, underwater video and camera trap datasets and conducts field experiments in data collection in some of Australia’s iconic joint-managed National Parks.

Project Title: Freshwater biological monitoring using deep learning

Project Description: This project aims to develop operational biological monitoring tools that are automated using deep learning, cloud computing, and remote sensors (Remote Underwater Videography and Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems). Novel deep learning training datasets for unique Australian flora and fauna will be generated and represent the largest datasets for the taxa and areas they’re collected in. This project aims to develop tools that will integrate into routine operations for environmental managers in the regions they’re being developed. Therefore, the advantages and limitations of the methods must be transparent and rigorously analysed.
