Greetings! I’m Hanbin From China. My PhD project is to develop seafood-harvesting location fingerprints for provenance, using nuclear isotopic analysis, to help build an Australia-wide database of seafood-harvesting locations.

Supervised by: Jes Sammut

Project Title: Determine the impact of sample size and species similarity on the geographical authentication of seafood using portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF)

Project Description: The overarching aim of this project is to develop a more efficient yet accurate process of establishing an elemental fingerprint database that can be used for multiple seafood species. By answering questions about sample size, species composition, and food quality within and between harvest sites, we can refine and improve the existing provenance process. Thus, this study will refine the provenance process by establishing an optimal procedure, reducing the logistical strain of sampling large numbers of geographically isolated fisheries, and exploring the potential usage of the large amount of data collected. This research will build on previous collaborative studies between UNSW and ANSTO using a field-deployable handheld XRF scanner.
