Carl Wang
Hi I'm Carl! I'm returning back to UNSW having completed a Civil Engineering and Surveying Bachelor's degree here in the past. Since then, I've been working professionally in the geospatial & mapping industry, now I'll be using these skills to map caves.

Project Title: Using laser scanner 3D mapping of caves to understand water flow pathways from the subsurface to the groundwater
Project Description: The aim is to explore the usage of mapping techniques such as LiDAR and photogrammetry to upscale drip-logging measurements and hydrological activity from a subset of stalactites to the whole cave in order to estimate recharge amounts. These loggers directly measure groundwater recharge inside caves and use cave stalagmites as recorders of past recharge frequency. Upscaling is a potential solution given it is not practical to measure each individual stalagmite, therefore, mapping the cave ceiling offers an opportunity to extrapolate data collected using the relationships derived between the physical dimensions obtained from point clouds done via machine learning and the aforementioned observed parameters from the drip-loggers.
