Dr. Josh Andres is a researcher and educator in Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), Interaction Design, and User Experience (UX), with experience across industry, industrial research, and academia. His work spans research, curriculum design, teaching, and fostering inclusive academic culture. He supervises PhD, Master’s, and undergraduate students and welcomes opportunities for research collaboration, applied partnerships, and co-supervision.

Josh co-leads the Human–Machine Experience Group at UNSW Canberra, focused on advancing the understanding, design, and implementation of human–machine systems for social impact.

Josh is internationally recognised within the HCI community. His PhD received the ACM SIGCHI Outstanding Dissertation Award—the first awarded in Australia. He is an Associate Researcher at the Exertion Games Lab (Monash University) and a Research Fellow at the Wellth Lab (University of Southampton). He served on the SIGCHI Executive Committee as Chair of Awards (2021–2022) and supported the General Chairs of the 2020 CHI Conference. He also founded and currently chairs the ACM SIGCHI Chapter for Canberra, a growing community of over 50 members across academia, industry, and startups.

Outlets featuring his work include OpenBCI, ZDNet, The Age, Channel 9, Insiderobotics, and the Sydney Morning Herald.

As a certified Design Thinking Coach, Josh has published and delivered over 15 academic workshops and more than 30 workshops in applied industry and research settings. His teaching and facilitation approach emphasises hands-on practice in small groups, structured share-backs, and open, inclusive discussion.

Prior to joining UNSW, Josh was at The Australian National University, and earlier spent seven years at IBM Research, where he worked across HCI, AI, blockchain, health, and the future of work—co-inventing 35 patents. Before that, he led the design of multi-device experiences used by millions. His research and design leadership have contributed to over AUD $22 million in technology engagements and to the development of guidelines that foster more inclusive, safer, and joyful experiences.
