Vice Admiral Peter Jones AO DSC RAN retired
Peter Jones joined the Royal Australian Naval College in 1974 as a 16 year old cadet midshipman. His early sea service ranged from the aircraft carrier Melbourne through to destroyers, minor war vessels and the Antarctic resupply ship Nanok S. After completing his specialist warfare training with the RN he served as gunnery officer of the frigate Canberra. Peter went onto be Executive Officer of the frigate Sydney, which deployed to the Red Sea for sanctions enforcement against Iraq; command of the frigate Melbourne which deployed to the Arabian Gulf for sanctions enforcement against Iraq (for which he was made a Member of the Order of Australia) and later Commander Australian Surface Task Group. During 2002-2003, then Captain Jones commanded the RAN Task Group in the Arabian Gulf and the multinational Maritime Interception Force (MIF). He was the Maritime Interception Operations Screen Commander during the 2003 Iraq War and commanded the MIF during the Khawr Abd Allah Waterway clearance operation. He was awarded a Distinguished Service Cross and a US Legion of Merit for his command of the MIF.
Peter’s shore appointments have included Research Officer to the Chief of Naval Staff and two posting in tactic development, they were as Officer in Charge of the Tactical Development Cell (for which he received a Maritime Commander’s Commendation) and as Deputy Director Tactics and Operational Analysis (at the Canadian Maritime Warfare Centre) for which he received a Canadian Chief of Maritime Staff Commendation. Peter later served as Director Naval Strategy & Futures, Commander Australian Navy Systems Command, Head of ICT Operations/Strategic J6 and Head Capability Systems within Capability Development Group.
In the course of his academic studies, Peter earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters of Arts from the University of New South Wales. He is also a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. In 2011 Peter was promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral and appointed as Chief Capability Development Group. He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2012. Peter retired from the Navy in later 2014.
He is a past President of the Australian Naval Institute and is one of the founding members of the Naval Studies Group. He is also a member of the RSL Australia’s Defence and National Security Committee.
