Overview
Do you currently work in the underground hard rock or coal mining industry, in the field of strata control? Or is this an area you'd like to progress into? The Master of Mine Geotechnical Engineering is the postgraduate degree for you.
You'll receive a foundational education in fundamental principles of rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering, as well as practical strata control applications. This degree teaches you practical knowledge to become a mine strata control engineer.
This degree is designed for professionals working at mine sites and are offered in a flexible delivery format; many are available in distance mode with a limited number of face-to-face workshops/sessions. Assessments include practical site-based assignments, group work, interactive work and presentations.

Entry requirements
Admission to this program requires completion of the 5059 UNSW Graduate Diploma in Mine Geotechnical Engineering with a minimum 65% average with no fails. In exceptional circumstances, students who can demonstrate equivalent prior learning may be approved an alternative entry pathway by written permission.
English language requirements
You may be asked to provide evidence of your English proficiency to study at UNSW depending on your educational background and citizenship. English language skills are vitally important for coping with lectures, tutorials, assignments and examinations - this is why UNSW requires a minimum English language competency for enrolment.
If you’re completing an Australian Year 12 qualification (e.g. NSW HSC or equivalent), you do not need to provide anything extra to prove your proficiency. Your qualification will be used as evidence of your English proficiency.
If you do need to provide evidence of your English proficiency, this will be indicated in your application. You can prove this by providing evidence that you meet one or more of the following criteria:

What will I study?

Program structure
This program is designed for those who currently work or aspire to work in the mining industry with a focus on ground and strata control.
Full program structure
In your first year you’ll study the Principles of Mining Excavations and other core subjects including:
- Hazard Identification, Risk and Safety Management in Mining
- Mining Geomechanics
- Geotechnical Data Collection and Analysis
- Mine Geology and Geophysics for Mining Operations
You’ll also study advanced core subjects including:
- Mining Methods, Mine Planning and Applied Geomechanics
- Ground Control Principles and Practice in Underground Mining
- Mine Slope Stability
- Mine Slope Monitoring Technologies
You must also undertake two research courses to gain practical experience.
Electives in this program include:
- Technology Management and Innovation in Mining
- Uranium Mining Fundamentals
- Mine Design and Feasibility
- Sustainable Tailings Management
