UNSW Heron Island Coral Reefs in a Changing Climate Course

Our oceans matter

Australia's coastline stretches over 34,000 km, and much of the population lives close to the sea. Our marine environments shape our economy, our communities, and our way of life. Yet they are also facing many pressures and impacts from human activity.

At CMSI, we provide a dynamic environment in which to improve our understanding of how marine ecosystems work and how we interact with them. We bring together a wealth of expertise and experience in  marine biology and ecology, oceanography, coastal geomorphology, marine microbiology, and environmental science to tackle real challenges facing our oceans.

Strategic objectives for the Centre for Marine Science & Innovation

We're here to generate knowledge, foster collaboration, and develop innovative solutions, with five strategic objectives:
Attracting the best
To attract and educate the best and brightest students and professionals in interdisciplinary research in marine science and innovation
World leading research
To be a leading, comprehensive and solution-focused centre in coastal and temperate marine research
Diverse Collaboration
Lead large-scale and diverse collaborations between industry, government, NGOs, indigenous groups and stakeholders
Creating value
To create value for UNSW, and our end user partner organisations with a modern collaborative and inclusive environment, contributing to the 2025 goals
Increasing awareness
Communicate marine science research for increased awareness of the value and need for protection of the marine environment
