Social Policy Research Centre
The NSW Ministry of Health wrote a plan called the Intellectual Disability Mental Health Strategy. This plan is about making mental health services better for people with intellectual disability and their families in NSW.
The Ministry has worked with UNSW’s National Centre for Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health and the NSW Council for Intellectual Disability (CID) to write this plan. They asked people with intellectual disability what should be in the plan.
The Ministry has asked us to talk to people with intellectual disability about the draft plan. We can talk with you in several ways:
- Online group
- Activities at community events
- Online – people can share their ideas in writing, pictures or a short video.
The project is led by UNSW’s Social Policy Research Centre and the International Centre for Future Health Systems. The researchers include people with lived experience and experts in co-design.

People with Intellectual Disability and Mental Health concerns
We would like to ask you about how you get help for your mental health. We call that mental health support.
You can also tell us about how your friends get help for their mental health.
Mental health problems are when the way you think and feeling starts to bother you.
Mental health support is when a doctor or support worker or family and friends help you to think and feel better.
The questions you might like to tell us about are:
- What mental health support did you get?
- What were the good parts of the mental health support?
- What would be better support for your mental health next time you need it?
- What ideas do you have to make mental health support better?
Send us your ideas in writing, picture, photo, video or audio via the form below.
Contact Sandra Gendera s.gendera@unsw.edu.au if you would like help with submitting your feedback.
We have 3 other ways you can tell us your ideas about mental health support and the IDMH Strategy

The NSW Ministry of Health Mental Health Branch has written a plan called the Intellectual Disability Mental Health Strategy. This plan is about making mental health services better for people with intellectual disability.
Before the plan is final, the Ministry will ask people with intellectual disability, their families, carers, and health workers what they think. This is to make sure the plan is clear, useful, and meets people’s needs.
In this process:
- Family means people who live life together, like parents, children, brothers and sisters, and other relatives.
- A Carer is someone who gives regular, unpaid help to a person with a disability, serious illness or mental health condition. This could be a family member, friend, kin, neighbour, or anyone who supports you.
Families and carers can share their thoughts by filling out a short survey online through Microsoft Teams.
