Building confidence and connections with peer mentoring in engineering

From your first project to final year designs, our Engineering peer mentoring programs are here to support your academic and personal growth. Connect with peers who can share insights and advice to help you make the most of your engineering studies.

Available programs

Bioinformatics Society
Peer Mentoring Program

The BINFSOC Peer Mentoring Program connects students interested in or studying Bioinformatics (either in the Engineering or Science streams, or as an elective) with more experienced mentors.

Given the small cohort of Bioinformatics students, the program aims to foster connections between individuals pursuing similar degrees. The goal is to provide support and make the experience enjoyable with weekly mentoring sessions. In addition, BINFSOC will organise social events to bring together all mentor groups.

Electrical Engineering Society
Peer Mentoring Program

ELSOC peer mentoring connects students in the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications (EET), helping build lasting friendships and memories while supporting professional development on the path to becoming electrical and telecommunication engineers.

Mentees can expect valuable advice on succeeding in courses, building new friendships and navigating the transition to UNSW. Incoming students are grouped with an experienced mentor and fellow mentees, participating in a week-by-week program. Additionally, mentees will have access to exclusive advice and activities directly from the School of EET.

Engineering Society
Peer Mentoring Program

The UNSW Engineering Society Peer Mentoring Program is designed to help first-year engineering students transition from high school to university by providing a supportive network and fostering lasting friendships.

The program offers opportunities for students to explore both social and professional pathways within the engineering community.

First-year undergraduate engineering students are grouped and connected with experienced mentors. The program includes weekly mentor-led bonding sessions and events organised by the UNSW Engineering Society. These events aim to help students connect, receive advice from experienced peers and gain insights into networking opportunities within the engineering field.

This program is highly recommended for all new engineering students, as it establishes a valuable support network to navigate university life and shape their future careers.

Women in Engineering Protege Program

The Protégé Program is a mentoring initiative run by the Women in Engineering Society to help first-year female-identifying students settle into uni and start their engineering journey with confidence.

Mentees are placed in small groups and matched with mentors who can share advice on classes, campus life and opportunities at UNSW. Throughout the term, program-wide checkpoints will be held to facilitate socialisation among participants. Additionally, regular mentor meet-ups are encouraged, with weekly guided topics to spark conversations.

Why join peer mentoring?

Joining a peer mentoring program offers a unique opportunity to expand your network and develop key skills that foster both personal and professional growth. As a mentee, you'll receive guidance from a senior student (mentor) to help you navigate university life with confidence. As a mentor, your support will empower new students to thrive academically and socially, while you build valuable skills. These include leadership, communication, and problem-solving that will enhance your employability and set you apart in the future.
