Available programs

UNSW Medicine Society (MEDSOC) First Year Peer Mentoring Program

The UNSW Medicine Society (MedSoc) First Year Peer Mentoring Program connects first-year students with mentors in senior years, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for those stepping into medicine.

Over the course of the program, participants engage with senior mentors in various mentoring sessions and interactive events, ranging from tutorials about content to general advice about approaching assignments and balancing everything university has to offer. This program is designed to ease the transition into university life, while also helping first years build meaningful connections which last the duration of their medicine journey.

Hospital Buddy System

The Hospital Buddy System (HBS) is a group mentoring initiative for medical students in years 2-6 who are placed at St George Hospital, St Vincent’s, Prince of Wales, Liverpool and South West Sydney hospitals.

Led by the UNSW Medical Society (MedSoc), the HBS fosters a collaborative learning environment, encouraging students to act as both mentors and mentees. It follows a trickle-down model, where Year 6 students mentor Year 5 students, who in turn mentor Year 4 students, continuing down through each year level to Year 2.

Students can receive a certificate of participation to submit as part of their end of term or end of year portfolios.

Why join peer mentoring?

Joining a peer mentoring program offers a unique opportunity to expand your network and develop key skills that foster both personal and professional growth. As a mentee, you'll receive guidance from a senior student (mentor) to help you navigate university life with confidence. As a mentor, your support will empower new students to thrive academically and socially, while you build valuable skills. These include leadership, communication, and problem-solving that will enhance your employability and set you apart in the future.
