Aviation Society Peer Mentoring Program

UNSW’s Aviation Society (AvSoc) is a supportive group of people who are passionate about aviation and everything the industry holds. We are an encouraging group of individuals who connect students to the aviation industry through events with external organisations, internal events and aim to encourage a deeper understanding of the industry through real-life experiences. 

The AvSoc Mentoring Program is designed to help you become more familiar with aviation and university in your first term at UNSW! Mentors provide a wonderful source of knowledge and experience you can learn from, making the adjustment into university life easier.

Data Science Society (DataSoc) Peer Mentoring Program

The DataSoc Peer Mentoring Program is designed to support first-year students in their transition from high school to university and to help them make the most of their university experience. The program pairs first-year students with peer mentors, offering a supportive group environment from the outset.

Participants will engage in weekly catch-ups, where peer mentors share their experiences and provide guidance. To enhance the university experience, the program also includes a variety of fun weekly challenges.

School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE PGSOC) Peer Mentoring Program

The MSE PGSOC Peer Mentoring Program is designed to support new students in the Materials Postgraduate Society (PGSOC) and the School of Materials Science and Engineering.

The program pairs international and domestic commencing students with a peer mentor, typically from the same research group, to foster a sense of connection and support. Mentees may opt-out at any time.

Mentoring sessions, which focus on shared experiences and understanding what is typical at each phase of the program, take place regularly. Participants can also join events such as the welcome event.

School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE UGSOC) Peer Mentoring Program

The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Undergraduate Society (UGSOC) Peer Mentoring Program supports first‑year students as they transition into university by connecting them with experienced peers.

Through regular meetups, social activities and group discussions, students build meaningful connections and gain practical guidance on study strategies, time management and navigating UNSW resources. The program fosters a strong sense of belonging within the MSE community and encourages students to engage in academic, social and professional opportunities.

With support from mentors and the School, first‑year students are set up to thrive both personally and academically.

Medical Science Society Peer Mentoring Program

The Medical Science Society Peer Mentoring Program supports first-year Bachelor of Medical Science students starting in Term 1 by easing the transition into university life. Experienced mentors from second year and above provide valuable guidance on key topics such as the program handbook, timetabling, support services, clubs, societies, career pathways and campus dining. Equipped with diverse backgrounds and comprehensive training, mentors offer knowledgeable and empathetic support to help students thrive.

The program includes one-on-one mentoring and engaging events featuring games and opportunities to connect with peers.

School of Psychology Peer Mentoring Program

The School of Psychology offers two peer mentoring streams to support students at different stages of their studies:

  1. The Undergraduate Program helps first-year Psychology students transition to university life. Third-year mentors lead weekly mentoring sessions addressing academic, social, career and university-related needs in a flexible, student-centred manner.
  2. The Honours Program supports students in their honours year through mentoring sessions led by PhD or Post-doctoral candidates. These informal meetings provide tailored guidance, resources and social support to help honours students manage their studies effectively.

Women in Science (WISSOC) Peer Mentoring Program

The Women in Science Peer Mentoring Program is an inclusive initiative designed to support undergraduate students across various scientific disciplines, with a particular focus on empowering women and minority groups in STEM fields.

The program aims to foster a supportive community, reduce stigma and encourage leadership development. Accredited by AHEGS, it is an excellent opportunity for students seeking leadership experience while building meaningful connections within a diverse social network.

Mentors are paired with mentees based on their degree, major and shared interests, and will meet weekly for mentoring sessions. The program also features academic and social events which offer opportunities to strengthen relationships and engage with the wider WISSOC community.

Mathematics Society Peer Mentoring

The UNSW MathSoc Peer Mentoring Program aims to facilitate the transition of first-year students from high school into tertiary education through providing support through the guidance of mentors.

The structured program will include weekly mentoring sessions and bonding events amongst a network of students who study or have a strong interest in mathematics. Mentees will be allocated into groups with two to three mentors in accordance to their time preferences.

Throughout this program, mentees will  build their confidence as they settle into university life whilst also fostering new friendships and discussions in a social environment. The program is expected to run for the first half of Term 1.

Women in Aviation Society Mentoring Program

UNSW’s Women In Aviation Society (WIASoc) is a supportive group of women and gender-diverse people who are passionate about aviation, who come together and encourage each other throughout university and beyond.

Focused on supporting each other in this gender-imbalanced industry, we host events focused on building an empowering community through aviation-based interactions, connecting students to industry and increasing representation of women and gender-diverse individuals in aviation.
